What is titanium flange?

A titanium flange is made of non-ferrous metal titanium or a titanium alloy to make a pipe and pipe 

connected with each other parts, connected to the pipe end. Titanium flanges are perforated and bolted 

together. Gasket seals between flanges. Flanged pipe fittings refer to pipe fittings with flanges (flanges 

or joints).

It may be threaded or welded. The flange connection consists of a pair of flanges, a gasket, and a 

the number of bolts and nuts. The gasket is placed between the two flange sealing surfaces, and after 

tightening the nut, the specific pressure on the surface of the gasket is deformed after reaching a 

certain value and the uneven place on the sealing surface is filled so that the connection is tight 

without leakage.

According to the structure type, there are flat-welding titanium flanges, butt-welding titanium flanges, 

threaded titanium flanges, and blind plate titanium flanges.

6. Performance characteristics:

Titanium is a new kind of metal. The performance of titanium is related to the content of impurities such 

as carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen. Overall, it has the following characteristics:

1. High strength

The density of titanium alloy is generally about 4.51g/ cubic centimeter, only 60% of steel, the density of 

pure titanium is close to the density of ordinary steel, and some high-strength titanium alloy exceeds 

the strength of many alloy structural steel. Therefore, the specific strength (strength/density) of titanium 

alloy is much greater than that of other metallic structural materials.

2. High thermal strength

Titanium alloy can still maintain the required strength at moderate temperatures and can work at 

450 ~ 500℃ for a long time.

3. Good corrosion resistance

The corrosion resistance of titanium alloy is much better than that of stainless steel when working in a 

the humid atmosphere and seawater medium. Resistance to pitting corrosion, acid corrosion, and stress 

corrosion is particularly strong; Excellent corrosion resistance to alkali, chloride, chlorine organic 

articles, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and so on.

4. Low-temperature performance is good

Titanium alloy can keep its mechanical properties at low temperatures and ultra-low temperatures. 

Titanium alloys with good low-temperature performance and very low clearance elements, such as TA7, 

can maintain certain plasticity at -253℃. Therefore, titanium alloy is also an important low-temperature 

structural material.

5. Chemical activity

Titanium has high chemical activity and has strong chemical reactions with O, N, H, CO, CO2, water 

vapor, and ammonia in the atmosphere. When the carbon content is greater than 0.2%, hard TiC will be 

formed in titanium alloy. When the temperature is higher, the TiN hard surface layer can be formed by 

the interaction with N. Above 600℃, titanium absorbs oxygen to form a hard layer with high hardness. 

When hydrogen content increases, an embrittlement layer will also be formed. The depth of a hard 

brittle surface produced by gas absorption can reach 0.1 ~ 0.15mm, and the hardening degree is 20% ~ 

30%. Titanium chemical affinity is also a large, easy to friction surface adhesion phenomenon.

6, Small thermal conductivity elasticity

The thermal conductivity of titanium λ=15.24W/ (m.K) is about 1/4 of nickel, 1/5 of iron, and 1/14 of 

aluminum, and the thermal conductivity of various titanium alloys is about 50% lower than that of 

titanium. The elastic modulus of titanium alloy is about 1/2 that of steel, so its rigidity is poor and easy 

to deform, so it is not suitable to make slender rods and thin wall parts.
