bars, flanges, special-shaped parts, etc.
Titanium forgings have high strength, low density, good mechanical properties, good toughness, and
corrosion resistance. In addition, the process performance of titanium forgings is poor, it is not easy to
cut, and it is easy to absorb impurities such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during thermal
processing. In addition, the wear resistance is poor and the production process is complicated.
Industrial production of titanium began in 1948. With the development of the aviation industry, the
titanium industry is growing at an average annual rate of about 8%. At present, the annual output of
titanium forgings in the world has reached more than 40,000 tons, and there are nearly 30 types of
titanium forgings. The most widely used titanium forgings are Ti-6Al-4V (TC4), Ti-5Al-2.5Sn (TA7) and
industrial pure titanium (TA1, TA2, and TA3).
Titanium forgings are mainly used to manufacture compressor parts of aircraft engines, followed by
structural parts of rockets, missiles, and high-speed aircraft. In the mid-1960s, titanium and its alloys

The difference between castings and forgings
1. Differences in mechanical properties.
After the secondary processing of the forging, there will be a hardening process, which will result in a fine arrangement and non-directional mechanical properties, which is better than that of castings.
2. The molding method differences.
Castings are melted in a smelting furnace and then poured into the model and cooled to form; forgings are formed by repeated restraint by a press under the effect of pressure.
3. The materials are different.
Castings: composed of molten steel directly cast, with poor and rough grain size, slightly lower metal
density, and poor mechanical stability; gear forgings: After casting, they are formed by
high-temperature forging, with fine grain size, slightly higher density, and stable mechanical properties.
4. Investigate non-processed appearance.
The castings are in the form of small particles, and the drape can be seen (casting the abrasive tool
and the cover); for free forging, the appearance is black after casting, and the appearance is
abbreviated as flakes, and the casting folds can be seen; die forging, at first glance, is a bit different
from the casting. Similar, but the graininess of the exterior is still relatively fine. And die forging is
often done for small parts, and it is difficult to do large parts.
5. Investigation from the processing surface.
Cast iron is significantly different from forgings. The surface of cast iron is not shiny (it will still be
shiny after grinding), the chips of the chips are broken chips, and the gray cast iron will have powdery
chips; the machined surface of cast steel is considered that there is no significant difference from the
forging surface and both have gloss.

The surface of the casting is thicker, and there are segregation and shrinkage holes, while the surface
of the gear forging is smooth and shiny. Because the gear forgings are forged by an external force,
while the castings are solidified.
