Titanium fiber felts are generally employed as the flow field or diffuser material in electrolyzer stacks, especially on the oxygen (anode) side. Due to the immediate oxidation of carbon to CO2 (in an acidic medium) or carbonate ions (in a basic medium) during the electrolysis reaction, carbon-based gas diffusion layers (GDLs) cannot be used at the oxygen evolution electrode in electrolyzer hardware. In this case, titanium fiber felt becomes the ideal candidate for the diffusion medium and also serves to provide electrical contact between the anode catalyst layer and bipolar plate or current collector component at the anode side.
TOPTITECH's titanium fiber felts are made from tiny titanium fibers that have been sintered (or annealed) to create a smooth, flat surface appropriate for use in electrolyzers. Although anode-fed electrolyzers are used in the majority of industrial applications, this product also makes a great diffusion medium for researchers studying cathode-fed electrolyzers.
Even while the majority of industrial applications run their electrolyzers in anode-fed mode and this product works great as a diffusion medium for the oxygen evolution electrode, it may also be used as a cathode-fed electrolyzer research's ideal diffusion medium.

Titanium fiber felt can be utilized as the diffusion medium at the anode or cathode in systems with unitized fuel cells, electrolyzers, or regenerative electrochemical devices. Regardless of the type of the reactants, this product can be used as the diffusion medium in electrochemical oxygen concentrators, electrochemical inerters, certain classes of batteries like redox flow batteries, etc.
Why use a Platinized Titanium Fiber Felt?
Platinized Titanium Fiber Felt is recommended when dealing with high-pressure electrolyzers where untreated titanium fiber felt can become less efficient due to the formation of an electrically insulating oxide layer at high oxygen pressures. While untreated titanium fiber felt has a longer lifespan compared to the carbon Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL), the presence of oxygen in the high-pressure electrolyzer can cause untreated titanium surfaces to develop an oxide coating (TiO2) on the small-diameter fibers, which can hinder the system's overall performance. This oxide coating acts as an electrical insulator, increasing the interfacial resistance in the cell and lowering its ability to conduct electrochemistry. Therefore, the use of Platinized Titanium Fiber Felt can improve the system's efficiency by preventing the formation of this oxide layer and enhancing its electrochemical conductivity.

Gold or platinum coating can stop the oxidation of titanium fibers already present in felt. Under normal electrolysis operating conditions, titanium's surface platinization creates a coating that is both chemically and electrically stable and increases the lifetime of the titanium's bulk material, making it the perfect material for applications that require both high performance and a long lifetime. The performance of the electrolyzer or the proposed electrochemical device would be significantly stabilized if TiO2 production could be prevented.
