The primary function of platinized titanium felt in electrolyzer cells and stacks, especially on the oxygen (anode) side, is as a flow field or diffuser material. Since a carbon-based gas diffusion layer (GDL) cannot be used in the electrolysis reaction because carbon is immediately oxidized to CO2 (in an acidic medium) or carbonate ions (in a basic medium) during the process, platinized titanium felt becomes the best option. This material also serves as an electrical contact between the anode catalyst layer and the bipolar plate or current collector assembly on the anode side.

While most industrial applications use anodically powered electrolyzers, and this product is an excellent diffusion medium for oxygen evolution electrodes, it can also be used by researchers conducting studies on cathodically powered electrolyzers.

 

In systems with integrated fuel cells or electrolyzers, regenerative electrochemical device systems, or both, platinumized titanium felt can be employed as a diffusion medium at the anode or cathode. This product can also be used as a diffusion medium in electrochemical oxygen concentrators, electrochemically inert gases, certain classes of batteries (e.g., redox flow batteries), and other applications.

 

When should platinum-coated titanium fiber felt be used?

However, if the electrolyzer is run at a pressure only a little bit above ambient pressure, the presence of oxygen does have an impact. Untreated titanium felt is not consumed as much as carbon gas diffusion layer (GDL) in electrolyzers ( 1 bar to 3 bar). Under high oxygen pressure, untreated titanium surfaces quickly develop an electrically insulating oxide layer (TiO2) that ultimately reduces system effectiveness. The electrochemical performance of the cell will suffer as a result of the oxide coating's electrical insulating effects, which will raise the cell's interfacial resistance.

 

Titanium does not oxidize when it is coated in gold or platinum. Platinum plating on titanium's surface results in a coating that, under typical electrolytic operating circumstances, is both chemically and electrically stable, extending the titanium block's service life and making it perfect for applications that need both high performance and durability. The performance of the electrolysis cell or the proposed electrochemical device will be significantly stabilized if titania is prevented from forming.
