What Are The Functions Of Titanium Fiber Felt As A Gas Diffusion Layer?
In the realm of PEM aqueous electrolyzers, the titanium fiber felt diffusion layer plays a crucial role in determining the efficiency and longevity of the system. As part of the membrane electrode assembly, which includes the diffusion layer, catalyst layer, and proton exchange membrane, it is the focal point for electrochemical reactions within the stack, making it essential for PEMWE (Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis). The diffusion layer has multiple vital functions:
1. Structural Fortitude: The diffusion layer provides structural support, ensuring the stability of the catalyst layer.
2. Uniform Water Distribution: It ensures the homogeneous dispersion of reactant water, preventing any disparities in water distribution.
3. Gas Emission: The diffusion layer efficiently expels synthesized high-purity gases, maintaining the uninterrupted progress of the reaction.
4. Conductivity: The conductivity of the diffusion layer facilitates the transmission of current, a critical requirement for the unimpeded operation of PEM.
What are the methods to evaluate the quality of titanium fiber felt?
1. Visual Inspection: Examine the external surface of the felt. Shorter fiber lengths (less than 60mm) may indicate lower quality, leading to higher electrical resistance, reduced lifespan, and lower pressure tolerance. Over time, such inferior products may experience fiber loosening, resulting in a rapid increase in voltage.
2. Water Droplet Test: Drop a few water droplets onto the surface of the titanium fiber felt and observe the speed at which the water disappears and permeates to the other side. Rapid disappearance and permeation indicate high quality, with good breathability and water permeability. If the water droplets do not disappear or permeate, it may indicate a lower-quality product, potentially causing poor water supply to the membrane electrode, resulting in high voltage and overheating, ultimately damaging the membrane electrode.
3. Resistance Test: Compare the voltage of electrolysis cells equipped with membranes of different qualities under the same conditions. Higher voltage may indicate an inferior product with lower hydrogen production and a shorter lifespan.
