A report highlighted that the average Google search consumes around 0.3 watt-hours of electricity, whereas ChatGPT requests consume 2.9 watt-hours. The report indicates that incorporating this technology into 9 billion searches per day would require nearly 10 terawatt-hours of additional electricity per year.
If not managed properly, the widespread use of AI is feared to further strain the climate crisis.
CNBC reported on the risks that artificial intelligence may pose during the climate crisis, as analyzed by the Coalition for Action Against Disinformation (CAAD). According to the survey results mentioned in the report, CAAD recommends regulatory authorities ensure transparency from tech companies regarding the electricity usage and emissions of their AI products. The coalition also suggests that governments should impose penalties if companies fail to comply with mandatory transparency regulations.
Of course, the usage of AI-based tools is unlikely to decrease significantly in the near future. On the contrary, as these tools become smarter and prove to save more valuable time and money, the emissions associated with AI are only expected to increase. Therefore, there is a need for sustainable closed-loop renewable energy and energy storage to meet the growing demand.
