New Breakthroughs Have Been Made in The Research On Hydrogen Production From Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells in My Country

On May 23, the reporter learned from Wuhan Huake Fusai which is located in Wuhan East Lake High-tech Zone that the 15×15cm2 single-cell solid oxide electrolytic cell (SOEC) stack was developed by the company is stable. The operating time has exceeded 1040 hours; at a working temperature of 800 °C, the maximum electrolysis power reaches 831 watts, the maximum electrolysis efficiency is higher than 97%, and the power consumption per cubic meter of hydrogen production is between 2.86 and 3.35 degrees, and the stable operation electrolysis power is higher than 600 watts. These SOEC technical indicators are at the leading level in domestic public reports.

Hydrogen is a secondary energy source with high calorific value, and its utilization does not produce pollution and greenhouse gases. At present, the main production technology of hydrogen is natural gas reforming, which will generate CO2 and cause problems of environmental pollution and the greenhouse effect. Hydrogen production by electrolysis of water is the reverse process of the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen to form water. If the use of renewable wind, photovoltaic and waste heat, the hydrogen generated by SOEC electrolysis of water is green hydrogen, without any pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Compared with other low-temperature water electrolysis technologies, such as alkaline water electrolyzers and proton exchange membrane electrolysis cells, SOEC is a high-temperature water electrolysis technology with higher conversion efficiency, even close to 100%.

According to Li Feng, general manager of Huake Fusai, with the support of the national 863 plan, the technical team of the project achieved a breakthrough in 5kW solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power generation technology in 2015, and started the process of industrialization. After continuous technical research, we have accumulated rich experience in single cells, stacks, power generation systems and test equipment, etc., and formed the ability from key materials, single-cell and stack preparation to independent power generation system integration and test equipment manufacturing.

The working principle of SOEC is the reverse process of SOFC. Since last year, Sinofair has carried out research and development of SOEC-related technologies on the basis of its SOFC technology. As a green energy technology, SOFC can use hydrogen to generate electricity, and SOEC can electrolyze water to produce hydrogen.
