High strength titanium alloy

High strength titanium alloys refer to classes of titanium alloy achieving tensile strengths between 1100-1400 MPa at room temperature. These include near-β and metastable β titanium alloys.

An early practical application was the Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al sub-stable β alloy, reaching 1350 MPa tensile strength. Later developments included cold-formable plate alloys like Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn and spring/fastener alloy Ti-8V-6Cr-4Mo-3Al-4Zr.

Initial commercial usage involved the Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al alloy, with tensile strengths up to 1350MPa, primarily for plates and springs.

Mechanical Properties
- High yield strength/tensile strength ratio allows reduction in weight vs. steel. Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al can exceed strength of high strength steels.
- Fatigue strength is about 50-75% higher than conventional titanium alloys. Excellent damage tolerance and durability.
- Corrosion resistance on par with or better than other titanium grades due to stable alpha-beta or beta microstructures.

The Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy possesses high strength, structural efficiency, reliability and lower production costs. It can achieve three tensile strengths and toughness levels through solution treatments. Excellent forging process performance allows isothermal or hot die forging from 760-800°C, enabling precision or semi-precision die forgings. Use temperatures up to 320°C make it suitable for aircraft landing gears, fuselages and wings requiring strength and durability.

Applications
- Aircraft components like jet engines, landing gears where strength-to-weight is critical.
- Industrial hardware such as fasteners, springs in chemical and offshore applications.
- Bicycles, motorsports, and other sports equipment.
- Medical implants benefitting from mechanical biocompatibility and imaging compatibility.
